Derby Diva Origin Story | How One Design Sparked a Creative Shift

This was originally shared with my email community, and it sparked so many replies that I wanted to make it permanent here.

Derby Diva

She wasn’t created for attention. She was born for liberation.
I call her Derby Diva.
For 8 years, I showed up to the Kentucky Derby with quiet awe.
I admired the bold. I applauded the extra.
I imagined myself in a world where I could wear that dress, that hat, that level of unfiltered expression.
But I stayed small.
Not because of price tags or practicality
but because I’d convinced myself that wanting was enough.
That maybe if I just imagined the bold version of me, it would be safer than becoming her.
Derby Diva was born from that truth.
And she was created to remind me
that self-expression isn’t extra. It’s essential.
That beauty is a decision.
That confidence isn’t something we earn; it’s something we allow.
I didn’t create her for the world.
I created her as my own mirror
The woman I kept postponing.
The one who leads with color.
Commands energy with presence.
And wears her freedom like a crown of flowers.
So I ask you... what version of you are you postponing?
And what becomes possible… when you stop waiting to feel ready?
Bring her magic into your next masterpiece. She’s ready. Are you?
